null 24 Hours of Science at the RI-MUHC: An immersion into medicine of the future

On May 11 and 12 a group of 26 students from the elementary school Étoile Filante were among the lucky Montrealers who got a behind-the-scenes look at the Simulation Laboratory at the Centre for Innovative Medicine (CIM). They took great care of Bob, the (almost human) dummy, and manipulated equipment to explore the inside of the human body. The children also explored the process of creating prosthetics through medical imaging and 3D printing.

These activities were part of the 13th edition of the 24 Hours of science event. Funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the popular science festival offered more than 500 science-related activities across Quebec. Both public outreach activities at the RI-MUHC were a success and received media coverage from Le Devoir, CBC radio 88.5 FM and CTV News.

Thank you to all involved in hosting these events, including Caroline White, Clinical Research Operating Room and Simulation Laboratory coordinator, José Luis Hoyo, 3D printing technician, and Justine Garcia, a PhD candidate in mechanical engineering at McGill University who worked on new 3D printed models of aortic tissue under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Lachapelle.
