Research across Our Sites
The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) secured funding from its public and private partners to build and equip a new, state-of-the-art research centre at the Glen site of the new MUHC in 2015. Construction of these facilities is now complete, along with renovations to new space adjacent to the Glen. In addition, laboratories and clinical research units at the Montreal General Hospital of the MUHC (MGH-MUHC) are being redesigned and renovated. Together, these facilities provide an environment that fosters collaborative translational research.

Research at the Glen Site

The design of the new RI-MUHC at the Glen site emphasizes the importance of translational research by grouping its basic laboratory, clinical and evaluative research in close proximity. Research activities are housed in three main centres: the Centre for Innovative Medicine (CIM, clinical research), Centre for Translational Biology (CTB, fundamental or pre-clinical research), and the Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE, population and health outcomes research). These centres integrate with the research programs and other research units.

The McConnell Centre for Innovative Medicine

The McConnell Centre for Innovative Medicine (CIM), serving more than 250 clinical and evaluative researchers, is a multipurpose evaluation unit with dedicated research space. Located at the Glen site, the CIM was designed to capitalize on basic research advances of MUHC and other McGill scientists. A comprehensive paediatric and adult technology platform for clinical research, the CIM houses cardiorespiratory and exercise physiology, medical imaging, endoscopy and surgery suites, among others.

The Centre for Translational Biology

The Centre for Translational Biology (CTB) houses approximately 151 biomedical scientists organized by research neighbourhoods. Situated at both the Glen and Montreal General Hospital of the MUHC (MGH-MUHC) sites, the CTB is set up as open laboratory units with shared technology platforms.

RI-MUHC researchers at both the Glen and the MGH-MUHC sites have access to highly specialized technology platforms equipped with the most advanced research tools. These include the Biobank, Bioinformatics, Containment Level 3, Drug Discovery, Histopathology, Immunophenotyping, Molecular Imaging, Proteomics, and Small Animal Imaging Labs (SAIL) platforms.

The Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation

The Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) focuses on epidemiologic, biostatistical and health services research. In spring 2017 many CORE researchers and personnel moved into new premises at 5252 de Maisonneuve Blvd. W., adjacent to the Glen. In 2019 other CORE investigators and their teams will occupy space currently undergoing renovation at the MGH-MUHC.

Research at the Montreal General Hospital of the MUHC

Modernization of the Montreal General Hospital of the MUHC (MGH-MUHC) was an important facet of the McGill University Health Centre Redevelopment Project. As part of this initiative, the RI-MUHC provides modern research facilities for those investigators whose research interests are centred on the clinical activities of the MGH-MUHC. Housing a large number of researchers from the Brain Repair and Integrative Neurosciences, Injury Repair Recovery and Cardiovascular Health Across the Lifespan programs, this site has undergone recent redevelopment and upgrades. Renovations are ongoing to provide upgraded clinical research space (CIM), new research office space (CORE) and a new Surgical Innovation Platform (CTB).
