Research Focus

Salvatore Carbonetto received an Honorary Investigator appointment to the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) in 2021. This appointment honours his distinguished contributions as a professor, researcher and leader at McGill University and the RI-MUHC and his numerous scientific contributions to the field of neuroscience. Focused on synapses and their essential role in information processing, memory storage and virtually all other brain functions, his work resulted in the discovery of dystroglycan, molecular/functional characterization of the extracellular matrix, and identification of pathways involved in synapse formation and muscular dystrophy. He hascontributed to the understanding of the genetics of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders. A former axis leader in neuroscience, his commitment to training and service to the wider RI-MUHC research community serve as an example and inspiration for all members.
