Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System Activity and the Role of Impedance Cardiography (ICG)
Cardiac autonomic nervous system activity can be quantified by recording the electrocardiogram (ECG) in combination with the impedance cardiogram (ICG). Complementary to the ECG that records the electrical activity of the heart, the ICG reflects the hydrodynamic aspects of the cardiac cycle. Variations in impedance are generated by fluctuations in blood volume and flow velocity in the ascending aorta and aortic arch during systole and diastole. We will explore the role of ICG in assessing cardiac autonomic nervous system activity and a personalized medicine approach to care.
