Insecticide Resistance and Malaria Control: Challenges & Opportunities

Malaria incidence and mortality rates in sub-Saharan Africa have declined by almost 50% since 2000, largely due to the mass deployment of insecticide-based vector control interventions. However, the widespread emergence of pyrethroid-resistant vector mosquitoes threatens to reverse the achievements in global malaria control to date. This talk will discuss the consequences of insecticide resistance for malaria control, and the evaluation of several ‘next-generation’ vector control tools in an ongoing cluster randomized trial in northern Tanzania.
