Dr. Dan Poenaru, Pediatric General Surgeon at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and Senior Scientist, Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, one of the highest honours in the country bestowed by the Governor General.

Dr. Poenaru has been recognized for his remarkable contributions, including the establishment of a pediatric surgical unit and novel training program in a remote area of Kenya in 2003. This initiative has significantly improved the quality and availability of pediatric surgical care in Kenya and beyond.

Additionally, Dr. Poenaru has played a pivotal role in founding three medical schools in Africa and has taken on leadership roles with the Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery and BethanyKids.

The Order of Canada celebrates outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation.

Dr. Poenaru conducts research in the Child Health and Human Development Program and Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation at the RI-MUHC, with a special interest in patient-centred care, healthcare AI and global surgical equity.
