My research focuses on how genes and environment influence the development of the lung, and how impaired lung development may influence lung disease in both infancy and adulthood. Respiratory distress after premature birth is among the leading causes of neonatal death in Canada. One major study in our laboratory involves a gene we cloned that regulates aspects of lung development. We are investigating whether abnormal expression of this gene is important in determining long-term risk for lung disease. A second major focus of our work is pediatric asthma. We are investigating how events that regulate lung development contribute to making an individual more or less susceptible to asthma. We are particularly interested in distinguishing hereditary effects from effects resulting from harmful environmental exposures during pregnancy and/or early life. An improved understanding of how lung development impacts risk of newborn and adult lung disease is essential to the development of new strategies for treatment and prevention.
