Research Focus
Diabetes mellitus affects more than 3 million Canadians and 450 million people worldwide. My research focuses on the biology of the pancreatic β-cell, responsible for the production of insulin. All forms of diabetes mellitus involve changes in the number or the activity of these cells. Using preclinical models and in vivo imaging technologies, I explore the role of genes associated with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, their molecular mechanisms of action and their potential as targets for therapy. My research is supported by the Wellcome Trust, CIHR and NIH.
