Treatment of Gram-negative blood stream infections: putting probability into practice

In this joint clinical/research talk, we will explore the concepts of empiric therapy in Gram-negative infections with an emphasis on how we can leverage clinical and epidemiological data to choose the "right" drug(s). We will further discuss how the clinical microbiology laboratory may further facilitate some of these decisions through provision of rapid diagnostic tests providing even partial information. We will conclude by discussing some of the most common patterns of resistance and how we should treat them in 2019 recognizing the limited drugs we have available in Canada and leveraging key concepts from pharmacology.
