Dr. Louise Pilote has received the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) Award of Excellence for Research in Cardiovascular Health and Disease in Women for 2021 in recognition for her outstanding scientific achievements. A senior scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), she is a member of its Cardiovascular Health Across the Lifespan Program and conducts research at the institute’s Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation. This award recognizes her exceptional work in the development of novel methodologies for measuring gender to evaluate its impact on women’s heart health and in demonstrating a crucial link between heart disease and gender, as well as her pioneering work in comparative effectiveness research using Big Data.

“I am pleased to see the increasing attention given to cardiovascular health and disease in women,” says Dr. Pilote. “By studying men and women separately, we can identify novel pathologies and risk factors that will hopefully lead to more precise diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.”

Dr. Pilote currently leads the Gender Outcomes International Group to Further Well-being Development (GOING-FWD), a data science and personalized medicine project. This consortium of thirty investigators from five countries aims to maximize risk prediction through the integration of sex and gender analysis in research using thirty cohorts of 30 million patients with chronic diseases. Among other projects, she also leads a study to evaluate novel cardiac imaging to diagnose coronary microvascular dysfunction, a pathogenesis of coronary disease most prevalent in women.

The ISH Women in Hypertension Research Committee established this award in 2018 to recognize and encourage research in cardiovascular health and disease in women.
