A doctoral student in the Metabolic Disorders and Complications Program and the Infectious Diseases and Immunity in Global Health Program at the RI-MUHC, Tho‑Alfakar Al-Aubodah is co-supervised by Drs. Tomoko Takano and Ciriaco Piccirillo. He received the second-place award for his abstract titled “B Cells and regulatory T Cells are differentially targeted by distinct immunosuppressive treatment strategies in pediatric idiopathic nephrotic syndrome.”

Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome is the most common chronic kidney disease among children, but its cause is not known despite five decades of research. This work aimed at pinning down the culprit immune cells that cause the disease. The discovery will help tailor the most effective treatment that will spare the affected children the heavy burden of side effects of currently used immune-suppressive drugs.

Congratulations Tho!
