Master of Science student Marissa Fazio won the best oral presentation award in the Population Health category at Quebec’s annual conference on maternal/child health, the 2022 Congrès provincial de la recherche Mère-Enfant. A student in Public Health at McGill University and trainee in the Child Health and Human Development (CHHD) Program at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), she received the award at the conference held on October 13 and 14 in Montreal. Students from the four major pediatric centres in Quebec – CHU Québec, Centre de recherche Sainte-Justine, CHU Sherbrooke, and the RI-MUHC – gathered for the sixth year to enjoy a multidisciplinary exchange and present their work.

The topic of Marissa Fazio’s winning presentation was “Organizational Risk Factors for Nosocomial Infection in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.” As she explains, “This study aims to evaluate the relationship between unit occupancy, nursing overtime, and nursing provision ratios with the risk of a healthcare-associated infection among very preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit.”

“Using innovative machine learning algorithms, she was able to show how nursing overtime contributes to adverse events in very preterm neonates in the neonatal intensive care unit,” says her supervisor, RI-MUHC researcher Dr. Marc Beltempo. “This work highlights that how we’re organized directly affects patient outcomes.”
