Source: RI-MUHC. Vassilios Papadopoulos, PhD, received an Honorary Investigator appointment to the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) in December 2022. This appointment recognizes his distinguished contributions in multiple roles: as former Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the RI-MUHC from 2007 till 2016, senior scientist in the Metabolic Disorders and Complications Program, holder of the Phil Gold Chair in Medicine at McGill University, and mentor of numerous researchers and trainees. His vital role in obtaining Canada Foundation for Innovation funding for new research facilities at the Glen site, overseeing the move and establishing a new program structure have left an enduring legacy at the RI‑MUHC.

Maintaining a highly productive and recognized research program in male reproduction at the same time is impressive evidence of hard work and ability. Vassilios Papadopoulos’ laboratory is recognized for innovative studies on cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for the initiation and maintenance of steroid biosynthesis in the gonads, adrenal, and brain, in health and disease. This research aims to understand the pathophysiology of steroidogenesis, develop new tools for the treatment of diseases related to elevated or low steroid levels, and alter subcellular steroid compartmentalization as a means to block disease acquisition and/or its progression.

The Honorary Investigator appointment was created in 2019 to recognize researchers for exceptional lifetime contributions to the RI-MUHC, to their field, or to both. Vassilios Papadopoulos’ achievements serve as an example and inspiration for the current RI-MUHC research community.
