Research Focus

Barry Posner received an Honorary Investigator appointment to the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre in 2021 in light of his distinguished contributions as a researcher, professor, and leader. This is exemplified by his globally recognized work on growth factor signaling mediated by receptor tyrosine kinases and their intracellular trafficking. Specifically, his laboratory discovered the role of internalization of ligand-receptor complexes into endosomes (ENs), the delineation of a key role for phosphotyrosine phosphatases in regulating receptor tyrosine kinase function (notably that of the insulin receptor kinase) within ENs, and the identification of new molecules in the pathway of insulin and EGF signaling, including IRS3, Gab2, and SHPTP1. This has been appropriately recognized by numerous awards, including fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and induction into the Order of Canada and the Order of Quebec.
