Joseph Mussa, a trainee at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), was recently awarded a scholarship for his doctoral research by the Société québécoise d’hypertension artérielle. The award is for his work on the impact of recurrent gestational diabetes mellitus and gestational hypertension on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among spousal partners.

Under the supervision of Dr. Kaberi Dasgupta, a scientist in the Metabolic Disorders and Complications Program and director of the Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation at the RI-MUHC, Joseph is studying the role of novel family- based exposures and indicators of CVD. Their goal is to reduce the burden of diabetes and CVD and to fill an important knowledge gap for patients and healthcare providers. By identifying high-risk populations for early assessment, modifiable risk factors can be identified and preventative measures implemented. Joseph explains that this research represents a key step in ongoing efforts to shift gestational diabetes mellitus and gestational hypertension from a concern specific to mothers into a family-wide priority.

Named in recognition of Dr. Yves Lacourcière, the SQHA’s Yves-Lacourcière scholarships fund awards prizes and scholarships annually to promote training and recruitment in basic and clinical research on arterial hypertension and associated risk factors.
