angle-left Mining the possibilities at the 2019 Platform Expo

Biomedical researchers and trainees explored ways to ratchet up their expertise with the help of RI-MUHC technology platforms

(Source: RI-MUHC.) On October 3, 2019, the technology platforms of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) held their second annual Platform Expo, a half-day event organized in collaboration with the RI-MUHC Trainee Council.

“The Platform Expo is a unique occasion to introduce the RI-MUHC’s cutting-edge platform facilities to new trainees and update the community on exciting new applications, technologies and services available,” says Patrice Vaillancourt, general manager of the platforms. This year the format was enhanced by giving a voice to RI-MUHC researchers who are users of multiple platforms. The event featured presentations from Swneke Bailey, PhD, Irah King, PhD, Ciriaco Piccirillo, PhD, Janusz Rak, MD, PhD, and Tomoko Takano, MD, PhD, who shared an aspect of their research and highlighted ways in which the platforms have played a role in advancing their projects.

“The research adventure we’ve had would not have been possible without the rich resources and technologies available at the platforms,” said Janusz Rak, MD, PhD, senior scientist at the Child Health and Development Program.

“The technology platforms are think tanks where you can bounce ideas off each other to solve real issues,’’ said Ciriaco Piccirillo, PhD, senior scientist at the Infectious Diseases and Immunity in Global Health Program.

The Platform Expo was attended by more than 200 graduate students, postdocs and research staff from the RI-MUHC, McGill University, and eight other research institutions and universities. An animated rotating poster session showcased the nine technology platforms as well as the Animal Resources Division. Participants welcomed this opportunity to learn about each platform’s capabilities through one-on-one discussions with the scientific experts.

“The speaker presentations were diverse and provided students with insight into ways of using multiple platforms for one project,’’ said Kashif Khan, PhD student at the Cardiovascular Health Across the Lifespan Program.

“It’s really helpful to be exposed to all the platforms at once and to interact freely with the staff,’’ said Tara Tsoarella, laboratory manager at the Infectious Diseases and Immunity in Global Health Program.
