Source: FRQS and RI-MUHC. Congratulations to Dorival Martins, Jr., PhD, the winner of the July 2019 Relève étoile Jacques-Genest award from the Fonds de recherche du Québec-Santé! He recently completed his postdoctoral training in Dr. Dao Nguyen’s laboratory at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centreand is the first author on a recent publication called Superoxide dismutase activity confers (p)ppGpp-mediated antibiotic tolerance to stationary-phase Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the paper illustrates that P. aeruginosa develops a tolerance to antibiotics when it is deprived of nutrients. These findings could enhance antibiotic treatments against persistent infections that affect those suffering from cystic fibrosis.
