Sleep-disordered breathing during pregnancy and subsequent impact on childhood health outcomes

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in pregnancy becomes more prevalent over the course of pregnancy, affecting up to ~30% of women by the third trimester. Recent prospective studies and meta-analyses have shown that SDB in pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal outcomes, including gestational diabetes and gestational hypertension. This talk will provide an overview of what we know about SDB in pregnancy, from its diagnosis to treatment. We will also review the data that demonstrates that there may be an association between maternal SDB and adverse child health outcomes, including an increased risk of SDB, obesity, adverse cardiometabolic outcomes and neurobehavioural problems in the child.
