Research Focus

My research focuses on the study of neurological disorders in the population. I have conducted research on multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and dementia. I am interested in identifying the population burden of these diseases including the frequency of occurrence, and I also evaluate risk factors and factors that influence the disease course. I work to develop and to validate methods of ascertaining neurological disease in large studies in the population when it is not feasible to include a physician assessment. Recently I have become interested in the physical and mental health of aging veterans and have developed an emerging research program in this area. As co-Principal investigator on the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, a 20-year study of 50,000 participants aged 45-85, I lead the Neurological Conditions Initiative and the Veterans' Health Initiative.
