Research Focus

My research focuses on the assessment of whole-body and muscle protein metabolism and protein requirements with age and in states of insulin resistance, including diabetes in older adults, using stable isotope methods. Recently, we have been assessing the cellular regulatory mechanisms overseeing muscle protein synthesis and breakdown and its relationship with sarcopenia. Several of my studies involve the nutritional assessment of healthy and frail elderly persons with the aim of improving their nutritional status and level of physical function.
