SIS  |  Surgical and Interventional Sciences Program

Themes

The Surgical and Interventional Sciences (SIS) Program is unique in Canada. The program has a multidisciplinary culture in which more than 50 basic and clinical scientists work together with trainees and research staff to expand knowledge in surgical procedures and trauma medicine. The program spans molecular and cellular research, genetics, tissue engineering, implant design, innovative techniques and technologies, translation and pre-clinical validation with clinical outcomes in disease.

The exceptional environment of the Surgical and Interventional Sciences Program fosters research to avoid or mitigate the impact of trauma, reducing patients’ decline in function, speeding up the recovery phase, rehabilitating, and minimizing the residual impact of trauma.

The program is organized around three central themes:

  1. Surgical Outcomes and Quality (Clinical Lead: Julio Fiore): Development and adoption of impactful research in surgical outcomes and quality improvement.
  2. Regenerative Medicine (Clinical Lead: To be confirmed): Translation of advances in regenerative medicine.
  3. Surgical Education and Simulation (Leads: Melina Vassiliou and Jason Harley): Lead in the field by improving training content, leveraging existing resources and developing enabling structures.

The SIS Program also supports cross-functional expertise in innovation, data science, medical technology, and precision health.
