As part of the JeunesExplo Stages d'un jour initiative, the Animal Resources Division (ARD) at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (The Institute) welcomed high school students for an immersive exploration of animal care careers in research environments.
The day began with a presentation on the role of Animal Health Technicians (AHTs) and the career pathways in this essential field. Students learned about the specialized skills AHTs apply at The Institute.

"It was inspiring to see high school students take interest in AHT, even with limited exposure," said Lucie Côté, DVM, Director of ARD. "This was a great chance to highlight the vital role of Animal Health Technicians in research, especially in promoting animal welfare and ethical standards. We discussed Animal Use Protocols and how research benefits both animals and humans."
In the afternoon, an interactive workshop allowed students to learn about essential animal care techniques, including safe handling, identification and routine procedures. To ensure a respectful and ethical learning environment, students practiced on stuffed animal "patients" before sharing reflections through a short feedback survey.
Responses were overwhelmingly positive: all students reporting an increased understanding of the profession and a heightened interest in exploring careers in animal care or related health sciences. For the ARD team, it was a rewarding opportunity to share their expertise and dedication while inspiring future professionals.
"We shared how Animal Health Technicians uphold the highest standards of care and welfare in research settings," added Anna Choy, Manager of the Animal Resources Division. "By introducing key techniques and best practices, we showed how AHTs play a crucial role in supporting life-saving scientific work. It was a meaningful exchange that reinforced the value of education and awareness."
Participation in the JeunesExplorateurs d'un jour initiative reflects The Institute's ongoing commitment to transparency and education in the responsible care of animals in research settings. By enabling students to engage directly with trained professionals and observe best practices in animal welfare, The Institute aims to foster transparency, build trust and contribute to the development of a well-informed and inspired future workforce in Quebec.
