Spine surgeon and innovator brings expertise in AI, robotics, and oncology to lead the Division

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Ahmed Aoude, B.Eng, M.Eng, MD, FRCSC, as Director of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, MUHC and McGill University, effective July 1 2026. I would like to recognize and sincerely thank Dr. Greg Berry for his decade of leadership of the Division and wish him all the best.

Dr. Ahmed Aoude is Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at McGill University. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, reflecting his longstanding interest in the intersection of technology and medicine. After industry experience, he earned his medical degree at the Université de Montréal, completed Orthopaedic Surgery residency at McGill, and undertook fellowships in Spine Surgery (University of Calgary) and Orthopaedic Oncology (University of Toronto).

Dr. Aoude has excelled clinically, educationally, operationally, and in research. As the only actively practicing surgeon in Canada trained in both spine and sarcoma, he cares for highly complex cases previously considered inoperable. A member of the Surgical and Interventional Sciences (SIS) Program at The Institute, Dr. Aoude’s research program is centered on improving clinical outcomes through innovation. His work integrates artificial intelligence, augmented reality, robotics, and advanced cancer detection technologies, with a particular emphasis on developing novel medical devices that enhance surgical precision, patient care, and oncologic outcomes. He leads projects including Oncotrack, ORNET.CA and MedAlign AR, holds 12 patents, and has secured competitive funding (NSERC, NRC‑IRAP) alongside 60 peer‑reviewed publications. He earned 1st place at the McGill Clinical Innovation Competition in 2025 and 2nd place at the Health Arena competition in 2026.

Dr. Aoude teaches in the Surgical Innovation Program and served in residency and fellowship education leadership roles including Clinical Teaching Unit (CTU) director, Chair of the Residency Education committee and Director of the Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship. He provides operational leadership as Site Director for the Department of Surgery at the MGH, chairs the MGH OR Committee, and directs the MUHC Sarcoma Program.

I look forward to working closely with Dr. Aoude as he implements his clinical, education, research and mentorship vision for the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the MUHC and McGill University and congratulate him on this new role.
