Research Focus

My research focuses on understanding how the microbiome – the communities of bacteria that live in and on our bodies – shapes immunity and influences cancer development and treatment responses, particularly in bladder cancer. Our work explores how the gut and urinary microbiomes communicate with the immune system through microbial metabolites and immune pathways, including the role of Immunoglobulin A (IgA), an antibody that helps regulate interactions between the body and its microbes. We are also interested in understanding why bladder cancer differs between women and men, and how biological sex influences immune responses, treatment outcomes, and disease progression. By combining immunology, microbiology, and cancer research, we aim to identify new biomarkers and therapeutic targets that can improve patient care. Ultimately, our goal is to develop more personalized treatment strategies that harness the microbiome and the immune system to achieve better outcomes for patients with bladder cancer.
