The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre’s Integral Mentorship for Inclusive Science Project (MISI) Prize will award up to two Indigenous students with a paid three-month Summer Research Internship. This opportunity is part of the NovaScience Program, in partnership with the Ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie of the Government of Québec.

The MISI Project aims to offer Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) trainees a first work experience in a research group, lab or centre studying cancer, epidemics, respiratory diseases, neurological disorders, cardiovascular health, metabolic complications, improved medicines and other topics investigated in the Institute’s research programs

In addition, awardees will be eligible to participate in a summer school program on inclusive research, receive mentorship from a researcher at The Institute and take part in other training and networking opportunities. Through this project, the Institute aims to increase the participation and success of women and Indigenous students in health research.

Awardees will receive:

  • A $7,500 stipend to support their research internship at the Institute (12 weeks, 20 hours per week).
  • Access to a four-day summer school on inclusive research and leadership.
  • Mentorship activities through the MISI Project.
  • Other career development opportunities related to inclusive research.

Date: May to September 30, 2026 (flexible start date within this period)

Time: Part-time internship (20 hours per week)

Location: Glen site, 1001 boul. Décarie, Montreal, QC H4A 3J1 and other Institute locations.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Self-identify as an Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) student currently enrolled in a university or CEGEP program.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Application process:

Submit the following documents by email or mail:

  1. Transcripts from your current program.
  2. Two reference letters:
    1. One from an Elder or community/organization leader or member.
    2. One from a teacher or educator.
  3. A personal statement outlining:
    1. The obstacles you have faced in your academic journey related to your Indigenous identity.
    2. The scientific and personal skills you have developed through these experiences.
    3. Your community involvement and concrete plans to benefit peers through your scientific work and engagement.
    4. Your full name, institution, program of study, expected date of graduation and contact information (phone number and email or mailing address).
