Jennifer Gantchev, doctoral student at McGill University and trainee at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), won an award for Best Oral Presentation at the 2020 Virtual Conference of the Skin Research Group of Canada. Held November 12 and 13, the conference brought together clinicians, basic scientists and industry partners engaged in skin disease research. Her winning talk was titled “The relationship between meiomitosis, HORMAD1 and genomic instability in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.”
“I’m working to unravel a novel mechanism that can be exploited in chemotherapy-resistant cancer cells,” she explains. “My research looks at how HORMAD1 repairs DNA damage and results in cancer cell survival, even following treatment.
“I really appreciated the opportunity to present at a national conference,” she adds. “It’s quite a different challenge to present remotely, but I’m very pleased and grateful that my presentation was selected for this award.”
