RI-MUHC ANNUAL REPORT 2022
YEAR IN REVIEW
BRAIN REPAIR AND INTEGRATIVE NEUROSCIENCE PROGRAM (BRaIN)
RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
A clinical trial that could change how we treat dementia
Clinical psychologist and scientist Lisa Koski, PhD, and her team are wrapping up an international collaboration that seeks to identify a new treatment for dementia. The clinical trial investigates how a non-invasive therapy, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), can treat symptoms of Alzheimer's disease by inducing brain plasticity.
Toward a better understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders
Early career researcher Wei-Hsiang Huang, PhD, and his team strive to understand how the brain develops and what occurs in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and Smith–Magenis syndrome (SMS). They were recently able to reverse some of the behavioural phenotypes of Smith-Magenis syndrome in mice by overexpressing the gene of a protein known as BDNF, paving the way to the development of new therapies. A multidisciplinary team to develop new treatments for vision loss
A multidisciplinary team of researchers at the RI-MUHC, including BRaIN Program scientists Janine Mendola, PhD, Amir Shmuel, PhD, and Leonard Levin, PhD, have started to test patients with traumatic optic neuropathy. The goal of this large research project is to go from drug development to clinical testing by creating a state-of-the-art brain analysis pipeline, using machine learning tools, with the goal of predicting clinical outcome.
