YEAR IN REVIEW
INJURY REPAIR RECOVERY (IRR) PROGRAM
RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
Taking opioids at home after surgery: More harms than benefits
A study co-led by Julio Fiore Jr., PhD, and Liane Feldman, MD, researchers in the Injury Repair Recovery (IRR) Program at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), concludes that prescribing opioid analgesics at discharge after surgery does not reduce postoperative pain and increases the risk of adverse events. The study results indicate that prescribing opioids to manage postoperative pain after discharge is not only unnecessary, but harmful in many surgical settings. These findings, published in The Lancet, fill a critical gap in knowledge about how pain should be managed at home after surgery.
Multimodal prehabilitation for patients awaiting open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
The PREEHAB Trial, an international clinical trial funded by the CIHR and led by Dr. Heather Gill, a scientist in the IRR Program, is investigating whether a multidisciplinary pre-operative program that involves exercise training, nutritional advice and supplementation, and psychosocial support will reduce complications following surgery. This program should decrease complications and speed up a patient's recovery after surgery. It is also a way for patients to take ownership of their disease and play an active role in their health care journey. The benefits from this program will go beyond the pre-operative time frame, as the habits and knowledge gained will improve their health over their lifetime. This study will also assess the economic impact and cost of a program like this.
Treatment of fibrosis in scleroderma
IRR Program researcher Anie Philip, PhD, and her McGill colleague Dieter Reinhardt, PhD, received a seed fund grant from the McGill Interdisciplinary Initiative in Infection and Immunity (MI4) to study scleroderma (systemic sclerosis), a chronic connective tissue disease characterized by fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. Their main goal is to determine whether soluble CD109 released from mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) can reduce fibrosis in systemic sclerosis animal models and skin biopsies of systemic sclerosis patients.
