THE INSTITUTE ANNUAL REPORT 2025
YOUR SUPPORT
At the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (The Institute), researchers, clinicians, and trainees benefit every day from the dedication and generosity of our partner foundations.
The McGill University Health Centre Foundation
The Montreal General Hospital Foundation
The Auxiliary of the Montreal General Hospital
The Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation
The Cedars Cancer Foundation
Together, these foundations provide vital support across The Institute — helping our teams accelerate scientific discovery, train the next generation, and bring innovations to patients more quickly. Their investments make possible everything from state-of-the-art research equipment and trainee scholarships to bold, forward-looking programs in cancer, child health, surgical innovation, infectious disease, precision medicine and much more.
Whether funding groundbreaking pilot projects or supporting world-renowned research programs, the impact of these foundations is visible across every site of The Institute.
To each of our foundation partners: thank you for believing in the power of research to change lives.
THE MCGILL UNIVERSITY HEALTH CENTRE (MUHC) FOUNDATION
In 2024-2025, the MUHC Foundation raised over $17M to support the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre. From bioprinting tissue to replace lung transplants to examining the critical role of the brain-gut connection in disease prevention, these funds ensure that The Institute remains a global leader in medical innovation. At its core, the Foundation’s support underscores its mission to combat medicine’s most pressing challenges, including personalized cancer treatments and the rising threat of antibiotic resistance.
Every dollar helps create new opportunities to test groundbreaking treatments, develop lifesaving technologies, and deliver better outcomes for patients.
Thanks to their generous community of donors, the MUHC Foundation is fueling groundbreaking research at the Institute and creating a lasting impact for generations to come.

THE MONTREAL GENERAL HOSPITAL (MGH) FOUNDATION
Thanks to generous donors, this year the Montreal General Hospital Foundation (MGHF) raised $9.1M to support The Institute, demonstrating the MGHF’s support of transformative research to fuel new discoveries.
Cancer research remains a focus with Together Against Cancer, a collaborative campaign between the Montreal General Hospital Foundation and the Cedars Cancer Foundation, which includes projects to improve access to clinical trials and research to prevent metastasis.
The MGHF also funded the Centre for Precision Psychiatry – Quebec, and supported The Institute in inaugurating the Surgical Performance Enhancement and Robotics (SuPER) Centre, a surgical robotics and AI research lab that is part of the Future of Surgery initiative.
At the annual Impact & Innovation Evening, 67 MGHF Research Award recipients collectively benefited from $2 million in funding. The celebration also presented health-tech startups in line with the MGHF’s Impact Investment Program, a partnership with The Institute’s Clinical Innovation Platform (CLIP).
The MGHF’s 2024–2025 collaborations with The Institute also include a historic tribute: the renaming of the MGH building that houses The Institute as the Dr. Phil Gold Pavilion.
Philanthropic support enables the MGHF to invest in research and innovation to transform the future of healthcare!

THE AUXILIARY OF THE MONTREAL GENERAL HOSPITAL

Working closely with the Montreal General Hospital Foundation (MGHF), the dedicated volunteers of the MGH Auxiliary raise funds to enhance patient care and comfort and to support medical research and the purchase of vital medical equipment at the MGH site of the MUHC.
THE MONTREAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION
Through its bold Unexpected Ways to Heal Campaign, The Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation (The Children’s Foundation) raised over $11.6M in Child Health and Human Development research during the 2024–2025 fiscal year. Since 2019, the Foundation’s campaign has raised an impressive $50.4M for research. The Children’s Foundation proudly champions more than 40 strategic, high-impact research projects with the potential to transform care for children and women with high-risk pregnancies, including:
- The Centre for Inherited Blindness – Dr. Robert Koenekoop
- Oral Immunotherapy – Dr. Moshe Ben-Shoshan
- Improving the care and outcome of critically ill newborns at risk of brain injury - Dr. Pia Wintermark
The Children’s Foundation is also a springboard for the next generation of scientific leaders, investing $1.5M to propel promising researchers forward and support the training of students and postdoctoral fellows.
None of this would be possible without the extraordinary generosity of their donors—and the brilliant minds at The Institute, whose vision, courage, and relentless pursuit of discovery are reshaping the future of pediatric and maternal health.

THE CEDARS CANCER FOUNDATION

The Cedars Cancer Foundation (Cedars) was proud to support groundbreaking cancer research at The Institute last year, raising over $763K. Through generous donor support, Cedars helped fuel innovative projects that are reshaping the future of cancer care.
One of the initiatives that Cedars supported was the integration of artificial intelligence into radiation oncology, which allows researchers to harness machine learning to personalize treatment and improve outcomes for patients. Cedars also supported vital research into sarcoma, a rare and complex cancer, enabling scientists to explore novel diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies.
Immunotherapy and targeted therapies—two of the most promising frontiers in oncology—received critical funding from Cedars as well. Investigators at The Institute are advancing our understanding of how to mobilize the immune system to fight cancer more effectively, while also developing precision treatments that zero in on cancer cells with minimal impact on healthy tissue.
By investing in these transformative projects, the Cedars Cancer Foundation continues to empower researchers and clinicians at The Institute to push boundaries, accelerate discoveries, and bring hope to patients and families across Québec. Together, we are forging a future where cancer is not only treatable—but beatable.
