Source: RI-MUHC. The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) held its third annual RI-MUHC Summer Student Research Day on August 13. Undergraduates, visiting students and incoming graduate students were invited to submit abstracts for presentation at an institute-wide event showcasing the hands-on research projects they conducted with RI-MUHC researchers this summer.

This year’s event featured 61 scientific presentations from students using clinical, fundamental and evaluative research methods, across all eight research programs.

Sixteen students (two per program) were chosen to give an oral presentation on their research findings and had the opportunity to receive one-on-one coaching from a skilled presentation coach. The students used this coaching to get more comfortable presenting their work and to hone their messages for a general scientific audience.

The remaining 45 students participated in a lively poster session in the afternoon, when each gave a short pitch presentation about their work.

“What’s great about the Summer Student Research Day is its informality,” said Louis Doré-Savard, PhD, manager of the Cardiovascular Health Across the Lifespan Program. “For once, it is not about impressing your audience to get an award or some recognition but only about sharing and learning from this delightful experience.”

“There are several things making this day special,” said Emily Bell, PhD, manager of the Desjardins Centre for Advanced Training at the RI-MUHC. “For the first time, it’s a collaboration between all the RI-MUHC research programs and the Desjardins Centre for Advanced Training. It’s an opportunity for researchers and mentoring graduate students to celebrate the work of young, aspiring scientists. And most of all, it is a chance for enthusiastic students to present their research—some for the first time—and to display their passion for science.”

The RI-MUHC congratulates all the students who presented and all who contributed to the scientific life of this institute over the summer. We wish you success in your future endeavours!
