Dr. Ana-Maria Copaescu is an associate investigator in the Infectious Diseases and Immunity in Global Health Program at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre

Ana Copaescu, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor in the McGill Department of Medicine and a clinician-scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (The Institute), has been awarded the 2024 Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) Research Award for her research publication in JAMA Internal Medicine titled “Efficacy of a Clinical Decision Rule to Enable Direct Oral Challenge in Patients With Low-Risk Penicillin Allergy : The PALACE Randomized Clinical Trial.” This award recognizes doctors who significantly contribute to advancing medical research in Quebec through the publication of a research article.

Dr. Copaescu specializes in allergy-immunology and internal medicine, with a particular focus on drug allergy-related pathologies, including their clinical identification, diagnostic methods, and management. Associate Investigator in the Infectious Diseases and Immunity in Global Health Program at the The Institute and Allergist-immunologist at the McGill University Health Centre, she is first author of the winning publication and leading investigator for the North American sites of the PALACE study, an international research endeavour that has evaluated a safer and simpler approach to penicillin allergy testing.

Dr. Copaescu’s research journey has been significantly influenced by her dedication to improving precision diagnosis and developing diagnostic tools in allergy-immunology, particularly drug allergy, severe drug reactions and antimicrobial stewardship. Her international collaborations, including her honorary fellow position at the University of Melbourne and the Centre for Antibiotic Allergy and Research, have enriched her research, allowing her to contribute to high-level research outputs that aim to enhance healthcare locally and globally.

Her work addresses critical health issues and fosters a network of international collaborators, which has been pivotal in her successful research journey.
