null Career Day for RI-MUHC Research Trainees provides tools for negotiating a career path
Students and postdocs connect with professionals from the Montreal life sciences community
Nov. 26, 2019
Source: RI-MUHC. An emerging generation of health researchers packed the atrium of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) on November 22, with the goal of exploring both long-sought and less obvious career paths.
More than twenty-five professionals from the Montreal life sciences community shared their insights on shaping a career at the fourth annual Career Day for Research Trainees organized by the Desjardins Centre for Advanced Training at the RI-MUHC. At a bustling networking lunch, trainees gleaned tips for success from professionals working in the private sector, government research agencies and academic health research centres. Trainees made new contacts in organizations like the National Research Council and such leading companies as Deloitte and Astrazeneca.
In the morning an interactive workshop on negotiation challenged trainees to act out three different scenarios. Participants now have a better sense of how to negotiate in their career, and as a bonus, can apply the same techniques in their day-to-day lives!
A warm thank you to all the guest animators who took time to mentor and inspire young scientists face to face, and special thanks to our workshop facilitator, professional life coach Niem Huynh, PhD, PPCC, for a valuable introduction to “Negotiate for what you want...and it's more than the salary”!
