Research Focus
Luis Souhami received an Honorary Scientist appointment to the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre in 2025. This clinical researcher played a very important role in the development of stereotactic radiosurgery for brain metastases and in the introduction of 3D conformal radiotherapy and high dose rate brachytherapy in Canada. His contributions to original research in the field of radiation oncology are exemplary with more than 280 peer-reviewed publications and 40 book chapters and visiting professorships worldwide including Brazil, the United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Ecuador. In 2011, his work has been recognized having earned the Gold Medal by the Brazilian Society of Radiotherapy, the Gordon Richards Lecture at the Canadian Association of Radiation Oncologists, and Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology. He also received the International Recognition Award in radiotherapy from the Society of Neuro-Oncology of Latin America in 2016; the Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology Research for Clinical Service Award in 2013; was inducted into the Academy of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 2018; and received the Cedars Award of Merit and Recognition for outstanding leadership in oncology in 2021. In May 2023, he was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine of Brazil. All these efforts whilst maintaining a strong and long-term service record as Associate Director of Division of Radiation Oncology (1991-2020). All these achievements serve as an example and inspiration for all current RI-MUHC members.
Luis Souhami’s research focuses on the treatment of tumors involving the brain, the gynecology area and the urogenital area.
