On June 14, the Government of Canada announced $693.8 million in funding for discovery and applied research, including $94.5 million for the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program to support 121 new and renewed chair holders at 39 postsecondary institutions across the country. Three researchers from the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) are among the seven new and 10 renewed Canada Research Chairs announced for McGill University. Sylvie Lambert, RN, PhD, Marc Martel, PhD, and Mathieu Roy, PhD, each earned the renewal of their Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs in the 2023-1 round.
- Sylvie Lambert, RN, PhD, Canada Research Chair in Illness Self-Management Support Interventions for Patients and their Family Caregivers, CIHR, Tier 2 (Renewal). Associate investigator, Cancer Research Program, RI-MUHC.
- Marc Martel, PhD, Canada Research Chair in Chronic Pain, Mental Health, and Opioid Use, CIHR, Tier 2 (Renewal). Scientist, Surgical and Interventional Sciences Program, RI‑MUHC.
- Mathieu Roy, PhD, Canada Research Chair in Brain Imaging of Experimental and Chronic Pain, CIHR, Tier 2 (Renewal). Investigator, Brain Repair and Integrative Neuroscience Program, RI-MUHC.
Tier 2 Chairs, valued at $120,000 annually for five years and renewable once at a value of $100,000 annually, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field.
Established in 2000 and investing approximately $311 million annually to recruit and retain world-class researchers in the fields of engineering, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences, the Canada Research Chairs Program is a tri-agency initiative of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
