The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (The Institute) proudly celebrates three exceptional researchers and clinicians whose careers are shaping health care in Quebec and beyond. On November 20, 2025, Liane Feldman, MD, Nadia Giannetti, MD and Lucy Gilbert, MD received the Medal of the Member of the National Assembly from Jennifer Maccarone (MNA for Westmount–Saint-Louis) during a ceremony at Victoria Hall in Westmount.
Presented to individuals whose leadership and vision have a transformative impact on their communities, the medal recognizes the doctors' deep commitment to excellence in patient care, research and teaching.
“The Medal of the Member of the National Assembly is bestowed upon leaders whose impact, innovation, and vision uplift our entire community… By celebrating their achievements, we send a powerful message: excellence knows no gender.”
— Jennifer Maccarone, MNA for Westmount–Saint-Louis

Advancing surgery through innovation and data-driven care
An investigator in the Surgical and Interventional Sciences Program at The Institute, Dr. Liane Feldman is the first woman to serve as Surgeon-in-Chief at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) and Chair of the Department of Surgery at McGill University. She is internationally recognized for pioneering minimally invasive techniques, implementing multidisciplinary care pathways that speed recovery, and developing data-driven models that improve outcomes for patients.
Reimagining cardiac care across the lifespan
Dr. Nadia Giannetti, an investigator in the Cardiovascular Health Across the Lifespan Program at The Institute and a leading heart failure and transplant specialist, has been a driving force behind advances in cardiac care at the MUHC. The first woman to lead the MUHC Department of Cardiology, she now serves as Associate Physician-in-Chief and Director of the Courtois Cardiovascular Signature Program—an ambitious initiative focused on personalizing cardiac health through research and innovation. She is also widely respected for her mentorship and patient-centred approach.
Transforming women's cancer screening worldwide
An investigator in the Cancer Research Program at The Institute and a leading gynecologic oncologist at the MUHC, Dr. Lucy Gilbert is internationally recognized for her work in women's cancers. She is the first woman to chair the Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology at McGill University and the visionary behind DOvEEgene, a novel screening test for ovarian and endometrial cancers that aims to detect disease before symptoms appear—an advance with the potential to redefine global standards of care.
The Institute gratefully acknowledges the role of the MUHC Foundation in nominating Drs. Feldman, Giannetti and Gilbert for this distinction. Their work aligns with the Foundation's Forward Fund: For Women's Health campaign, launched in May 2025, which supports research and initiatives focused on women's health at the MUHC and The Institute. Jennifer Maccarone, who presented the medals, serves as a co-chair of the campaign.
The Institute extends its congratulations to Drs. Feldman, Giannetti and Gilbert, whose accomplishments reflect the strength of our research and clinical community and the impact of close partnership between care, discovery and training. Their leadership continues to inspire the next generation of scientists and health-care professionals across the McGill ecosystem.
