The Skillsets program offers a series of workshops that aim to help graduate students and postdoctoral students in their career development. The McGill Career Planning Services (CaPS) offers workshops and one-on-one help to trainees, including help in creating effective CVs. |
Networking organizations |
Women in Bio is a professional development group for women in the biological sciences. This organization recently opened a Montreal chapter. Emerging Health Leaders aims to develop a professional network for young people in health management. It welcomes interested graduate students and postdocs to its meetings. |
Teaching and communication skills |
Let's Talk Science promotes science education through mentorship, classroom presentations and other activities. Brain Awareness Montreal and Immunology Montreal are organizations that do community outreach in the Montreal area. |
Public Policy |
The Science & Policy Exchange is an annual conference organized by McGill graduate students that explores the intersection between science and policy. |
Online career development tools |
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has developed an online tool to help trainees develop an individual development plan. This tool doesn't take long to use and helps trainees identify possible careers and develop strategies to attain career goals. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has an excellent guide for laboratory management for postdocs and new faculty. Inside Higher Education and University Affairs have articles, blogs and other documents to advise trainees on their career development within or outside academia. The Black Hole is an excellent blog for early-career scientists in Canada. |
