Research Focus

My research focuses on both clinical and basic science research. I am designing surgical implants to treat articular trauma. I have invented and patented a novel porous implant for fracture fixation, designed to improve the efficiency of bone healing particularly in the setting of fractures that remain problematic to treat with current methods. The porous screw I developed could reduce the morbidity associated with scaphoid fractures, therefore offering a more effective procedure, resulting in better quality of life for patients and healthcare costs savings. I plan to expand the use of the porous screw to other fractured bones and to fixation of osteochondral injuries and tendons. I am developing methods of medical imaging of articular pathologies. I have conceived a new method for evaluating humeral head impaction fractures (Hill-Sachs lesions) by dynamic ultrasound imaging. I am also working on developing and refining 3D magnetic resonance imaging and defining its role in diagnosing intraarticular injuries. I am attempting to establish how 3D imaging techniques can improve preoperative planning for knee ligament reconstructive surgery. I am pioneering a research collaboration as one of the two inaugural research supervisors in a new combined pilot graduate program in biodesign (Innovation Fellowship).
