YEAR IN REVIEW

INJURY REPAIR RECOVERY (IRR) PROGRAM

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Patients’ perspectives: “When will I recover?”

To patients, the meaning of recovery goes beyond traditional clinical parameters commonly assessed in surgical research. Findings by Drs. Julio F. Fiore Junior, Liane Feldman and colleagues support consideration of an interplay of physical, psychological and social factors in surgeon-patient discussions about postoperative recovery. “Zombie” cells breakthrough recognized by Arthritis Society

Research by postdoctoral fellow Hosni Cherif made the Arthritis Society’s Top 10 Breakthroughs list in 2020. Studying spine degeneration, he found that RG-7112, a synthetic drug, and o-Vanillin, a natural compound, triggered changes that helped grow new, healthy cells while also killing senescent or “zombie” cells. These findings could lead to new drugs for back pain.

Winners of the 2021 McGill Clinical Innovation Competition

The Remote Optical team, first-place winner of the Marika Zelenka Roy Innovation Prize, included three IRR Program trainees, as did NURA Medical, which took second place and also won the Bereskin and Parr Innovation Prize. Both teams are now members of the Clinical Innovation Platform at the RI-MUHC.
