For over 65 years, the Hospitality Corner has offered refreshments and respite at the Montreal General Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre (MGH-MUHC), serving fresh, home-cooked meals and collecting tip money to donate to research. Originally a small gift shop, the Hospitality Corner has grown to include cafés and a restaurant plus catering services run by a network of over 50 dedicated volunteers and more than 20 employees.

As part of a long-standing tradition, the MGH Auxiliary has once again generously donated their tip money to the Research Institute of the MUHC.

Representing the MGH Auxiliary, Ms. Yvonne Mass (Acting President), Mr. Robert Gaudreau (Administration) and Ms. Rita Touma (V.P. Finance) presented a cheque in the amount of $75,000 to the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) on November 21. The donation was gratefully received by RI-MUHC representatives.

“The donation of $75,000 will purchase a microscope for the Surgical Innovation Platform, a foundational piece of equipment for this new facility at the RI-MUHC”—Dr. Bruce Mazer

“My visit to the MGH Auxiliary Board meeting is one of my favorite duties,” said Dr. Bruce Mazer, Interim Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the RI- MUHC. “This dedicated group has an amazing mission and we greatly appreciate their time and diligence at the Hospitality Corner, which contributes all tip money to help fund research. The donation of $75,000 will purchase a microscope for the Surgical Innovation Platform, a foundational piece of equipment for this new facility at the RI-MUHC.”

Joining Dr. Mazer were two researchers influential in developing the Surgical Innovation Platform: Jake Barralet, PhD, associate leader of the Injury Repair Recovery Program (IRR), and Dr. Gerald Fried, investigator in the IRR Program and former surgeon-in-chief at the MUHC.

The MGH Auxiliary provides financial support for other research and medical activities at the MGH, working closely with the MGH Foundation, the Planning Committee, and MGH medical professionals. Mr. Gaudreau was pleased to present the Tips for Research proceeds over and above other annual funds provided by the MGH Auxiliary. “We are able to provide additional financial support of over $100,000 each year,” he said, “due to the generous and active participation of our Hospitality Corner volunteers.”
