Renowned urologic oncology expert to lead the MUHC's Division of Urology and hold the “Dr. Mostafa Elhilali and David Azrieli” Chair in Urological Sciences

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Wassim Kassouf as Director of the Division of Urology at the MUHC and McGill University, as well as to the “Dr. Mostafa Elhilali and David Azrieli” Chair in Urological Sciences, effective September 1, 2026. I would like to recognize and sincerely thank Dr. Simon Tanguay for the decade during which he led the Division with distinction.
Dr. Kassouf is a Professor in the Department of Surgery and an internationally recognized leader in urologic oncology. A former McGill University student, Dr. Kassouf completed his medical education and urology residency training at McGill before pursuing a fellowship in urologic oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas in Houston. An exceptional surgeon-scientist, Dr. Kassouf’s clinical and translational work focuses primarily on improving organ-preserving approaches for bladder cancer. A dedicated leader within the McGill University community, he has previously served as Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs in the Department of Surgery and as Director of the Urology Residency Program.
Nationally and internationally, Dr. Kassouf is a former President of the Canadian Urological Association, co-founder of Bladder Cancer Canada, Co-Chair of the Genitourinary Disease Site Group of the Canadian Cancer Trials Group (CCTG), and an Executive Member of the National Institutes of Health Genitourinary Steering Committee. He has authored more than 430 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, supported by sustained independent funding from prestigious organizations, including the U.S. Department of Defense and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He currently serves as Section Editor for Bladder Cancer at the Canadian Urological Association Journal.
Among his many honours are the American Urological Association’s Young Urologist of the Year Award, the Bladder Cancer Canada Medical Leadership Award, and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS) Research Scholar Award.
I look forward to working closely with Dr. Kassouf as he brings his vision for clinical care, education, research, and mentorship to the Division of Urology at the MUHC and McGill University, and I congratulate him on his new role.
