Last month, Dr. Patricia Fontela’s collaboration with Drs. Dominique Piquette (Sunnybrook, Toronto) and Denise Jaworsky (UBC) was awarded $2.4 million from the CIHR Health Research Training Platform for a program called the Life-Threatening Illness National Group (LifTING) Research Training Platform. It aims to improve research on life-threatening diseases by training multidisciplinary researchers, patient and family partners, and community citizens on research methods, knowledge, skills and attitudes related to health services, interprofessional collaboration, and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusiveness (EDI).

The LifTING Research Training Platform is an expansion of the Sepsis Canada Research Training Program, also led by Dr. Fontela. For the Sepsis Canada program, Dr. Fontela was awarded $1.4 million from CIHR-Sepsis Canada in 2021.

“The central idea of both LifTING and the Sepsis Canada Research Training Programs is to break research silos,” says Dr. Fontela. “Our goal is to bring together multidisciplinary researchers, patient and family partners, healthcare professionals, and community citizens so we can perform research on life-threatening diseases that will improve the care offered to Canadians, and that is also meaningful to our society.”

A scientist in the Child Health and Human Development Program at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre, Dr. Fontela conducts her research at the Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation.
