Profiles of Our Board Members

Peter Kruyt, B. Comm., MBA
Chairman of the Board

Peter Kruyt became Senior Advisor to Power Corporation of Canada in January 2018. He is Vice-Chairman of Power Energy Corporation and is a director of Lion Electric Company and Potentia Renewables Inc.

Mr. Kruyt became a member of the board of directors of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada in 2016 and was appointed Chairman of the Board of the McGill University Health Centre in 2017 and Chairman of the Board of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre in 2019. He is also a director of Tennis Canada.

When he joined Power Corporation in 1981, he served as Executive Assistant to Mr. Paul G. Desmarais, who, at the time, was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Kruyt took over as President and Chief Executive Officer of Power Broadcasting Inc. from 1987 to 2000 and President and Chief Executive Officer of Power Technology Investment Corporation from 2000 until 2009.

Mr. Kruyt was Chairman of Power Pacific Corporation Limited, a subsidiary of Power Corporation, one of the Corporation’s equity investment funds from 1996 to 2020. He was Vice-President of Power Corporation from 1996 to 2017, as well as a director of Great West Lifeco Inc. from 2003 to 2008, of Bellus Inc. from 2002 to 2009, of Bombardier Sifang Power (Qingdao) Transportation Ltd and of La Presse, ltée from 1985 to 2016. He also served as an alternate director on the board of CITIC Pacific Ltd. in Hong Kong from 2003 to 2014.

Mr. Kruyt was Chairman of the Canada China Business Council from 2003 to 2018 and director of Eagle Creek Renewable Energy Inc. from June 2013 to November 2018. He has also served on the board of the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation and of the Center for Interuniversity Research and Analysis on Organizations (CIRANO). He was also a member of the Board of Governors of Concordia University from 2000 to 2005 and served as Chairman from 2005 to 2012. In addition, he was a member of the advisory board of the School of Business at Memorial University of Newfoundland, a director of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters and chaired the Government Task Force on Digital Radio in 1992.

Peter Kruyt obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Concordia University and a MBA from the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD). Mr. Kruyt is fluent in English and French.


Mary-Anne Carignan, MBA
Vice-Chair

Mary-Anne Carignan has been serving since 2008 as Co-president of Purkinje Inc., a pioneer in the design, development and marketing of solutions supporting clinical decision-making and healthcare information technology. She is convinced that the patient should be at the core of a progressive healthcare system and that technology facilitates the collaboration needed for optimal health outcomes.

Between 2001 and 2007 Ms. Carignan was General Manager at Fusion MD and The Catalyst Group, two organizations focused on health care and technology in the North American marketplace. Prior to that, Ms. Carignan worked for Philip Morris (part of the Kraft and Nabisco family of companies), where she was the first woman named to its international budget department and spent a decade working in Lausanne (Switzerland), Zagreb (Croatia) and Antwerp (Belgium). She also established the Nursefinders operations in New York City, serving hospitals and long-term care facilities.

A founder of the Québec chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada, Ms. Carignan served on its board from 2006 to 2016. In 2010, Ms. Carignan was appointed by the Canadian Minister of International Trade to the SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) Advisory Board. A socially engaged lecturer promoting the advancement of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), she also serves as a mentor for the Montreal Children’s Hospital and the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada.

Mary-Anne Carignan earned her honors MBA from Business School Lausanne. She is fluent in English and French.


Pierre Lortie, M.C., FCAE
Treasurer

Pierre Lortie is a Senior Business Advisor at Dentons Canada LLP. He is also a Director of ECN Capital Corp.

Pierre is Chairman of the Schmeelk Canada Foundation; President of the Canadian Ditchley Foundation; Director of the Research Center of the McGill University Health Center; a Director of the Marine Biotechnology Research Center and a Director of the Montreal Cancer Institute.

Pierre served as Governor of the Council of Canadian Academies, President of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and as member of the Asia Pacific Foundation Taskforce on Canada’s strategies towards the regional institutional architecture that governs in Asia and of the Advisory Group on Enhancing cooperation between Australia and Canada in the Asia-Pacific of the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI).

Pierre held senior executive positions at Bombardier until December 2003 where he served as President and COO of Bombardier Transportation; President and COO of Bombardier Capital; President and COO of Bombardier International; and President of Bombardier Aerospace, Regional Aircraft. He has been Chairman, President and CEO of Provigo Inc.; President and CEO of the Montréal Stock Exchange and a Senior Partner of SECOR Inc.

Pierre held several government appointments. He served as Chairman of Canada’s Royal Commission on Electoral Reform and Party Financing. He was a representative of the Prime Minister of Canada on the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) from 1999 to 2003. He also served as a member of the Panel of Advisors of the China Development Research Foundation of China’s State Council (Beijing). In the technology field, he served as Vice Chairman of Canada’s National Advisory Board on Science and Technology and as Chairman of the Centre for Information Technology Innovation.

He served as Chairman of the Montréal Demerger Transition Committee and he directed, as the Representative of the public authorities, the PPP procurement of the new McGill University Health Center (MUHC), the Centre hospitalier universitaire de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) and the Research Centre of the CHUM.

He received an M.B.A. with honors from the University of Chicago, a licence in applied economics from the Université Louvain, Belgium and a Bachelor’s degree in applied sciences (engineering physics) from Université Laval. He was awarded a Doctorate Honoris Causa in civil law from Bishop’s University and he was awarded the Distinguished Service to Canada Award by the Public Policy Forum. He received his certification from the Canadian Institute of Corporate Directors. He was elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 1988 and appointed Senior Fellow of the C.D. Howe Institute in 2019.

Pierre was appointed member of the Order of Canada in 2001 and was the Recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.


Cinzia Raponi, CPA, CMA
Secretary

Cinzia Raponi is a Chartered Professional Accountant with over 25 years of experience in research administration. During the course of her career, Ms. Raponi occupied various positions such as Associate General Director of Operations, Director of Research Grants and Contracts, as well as Director of Financial Systems and Operations. In 1999 she presided over the merger of the research centres affiliated with the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) to become what is now known as the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC).

In her current role as Director of Administration, RI-MUHC, Ms. Raponi is responsible for the day-to-day operations and performance of the numerous divisions within the RI-MUHC, including Finance, Grants & Data Management, Quality Assurance, Environmental Health & Safety, Human Resources, Communications, Biomedical & Technical Services, Research Informatics & Information Technology, Animal Resource Division and the Centre for Innovative Medicine (CIM).

Ms. Raponi served on several committees of the Ministère de la Santé et Services Sociaux (MSSS), through which she contributed to the development of new policies that support research activities in the province of Québec. She also served on McGill University's Tri-Agency Financial Monitoring Review Advisory Committee and collaborated with numerous research centres across Québec to harmonize administrative processes and promote research.


Graham Bagnall, CPA, MBA
Board Member

Graham Bagnall is a retired financial executive of BCE.

Mr. Bagnall has been a member of the Board of the RI-MUHC since 2012 and also serves on the Audit and Investment Committee. He has served on the boards and councils of various institutions within the MUHC for almost thirty years.

Mr. Bagnall served on the Board of the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation from 1991 until 2012 and was its Chairman from1994 to 1996. Prior to the creation of the MUHC, Mr. Bagnall was also Vice-Chairman of the Montreal Children’s Hospital. He became a member of the MUHC Board of Directors in 1997, serving until 2003.

Since 1997 Mr. Bagnall has continued to be a member of the MUHC’s Council for Services to Children and Adolescents, serving as its Chairman from 2003 until 2006.

Mr. Bagnall has also served on the boards of a number of other professional and nonprofit organizations and is a former Chairman of the Dawson College Foundation.

Mr. Bagnall was born and educated in the United Kingdom and graduated in 1970 from the University of Manchester with an honours degree in economics. Upon emigrating to Canada, he joined Clarkson Gordon (now Ernst & Young), receiving his CA (CPA) designation in 1973. He began a thirty-year career with Bell Canada in 1974. In 1975 Mr Bagnall received his MBA from York University in Toronto.


Miguel N. Burnier Jr., MD, M.Sc., PhD, FRCSC, CAHSE
Board Member

Dr. Burnier is a Full Professor of Ophthalmology, Pathology, Medicine, Oncology and Surgery at McGill University and former Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at McGill (1993 to 2008). He was also the Thomas O. Hecht Family Chair in Ophthalmology (1996-2012)—the first and only endowment Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology—which was awarded to Dr. Burnier upon his arrival as Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Burnier is currently Interim Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer as well as Director of Training & Development at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre.

Dr. Burnier received his MD and completed his residencies in pathology and ophthalmology in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He also completed his M.Sc. and a PhD in ocular pathology at the Federal University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. After his first pathology fellowship at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Washington, D.C., Dr. Burnier returned to Sao Paulo and became Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology, Federal University of Sao Paulo (1986-1989). In 1989 Dr. Burnier returned to the U.S. as a professor and senior scientist working at both the AFIP and the National Eye Institute, Bethesda, MD, until 1993, when he was recruited to McGill University to be Professor of Pathology and Ophthalmology, as well as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Burnier is the Director of the MUHC-McGill University Ocular Pathology & Translational Research Laboratory. This unit is a unique facility in Canada and has become the largest research and training centre in ocular pathology in North America. It plays a crucial role as a consultancy service to pathologists, ophthalmologists and oncologists and teaching facility to medical students, residents and fellows from Canada and around the world. The diversity of publications in a variety of journals, such as Nature, Eye, Cancer, Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, American Journal of Pathology, Pathology, Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology and Carcinogenesis, among others, reflects the scope of this research and training program. The Laboratory offers the only ocular pathology graduate program in North America. Over 150 fellows and graduate students from different countries have passed through the Laboratory. Since 1999 over 30 graduate students of the laboratory completed their theses in the Pathology Graduate Program, McGill University. Also during this time, 50 international graduate students from the Federal University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, University of Valladolid and University of Barcelona, both in Spain, and University of Coimbra, Portugal, completed their theses.

Dr. Burnier is the author and co-author of over 650 publications, including 475 peer-reviewed papers, 350 peer-reviewed abstracts, over 70 publications in various scientific journals, three books and 21 book chapters. He has served as guest speaker and visiting professor at many conferences and symposia across Canada, the United States, Europe, South America, Australia and Asia. Most recently, Dr. Burnier was chosen to deliver the Victor T. Curtin lecture at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami, FL.

Dr. Burnier is an active member of over 20 societies. He was editor-in-chief of The Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology from 2002-2005 and continues to serve as editorial board member and reviewer for several publications, such as Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences (IOVS), Human Pathology, The American Journal of Pathology, The Canadian Journal of Pathology, The American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, Cancer, Clinical Cancer Research, Melanoma Research and The British Journal of Ophthalmology. Among his international appointments, Dr. Burnier is Professor of Post-Graduate Studies and Thesis Supervisor for the Department of Ophthalmology and Pathology, Federal University of Sao Paulo, Brazil; Professor of Ophthalmology and Pathology, University of Valladolid, Spain; Professor and Consultant Pathologist for the AFIP American Registry of Pathology, Washington, D.C.; and Professor of Ophthalmology and Pathology, University of Coimbra, Portugal.

Dr. Burnier has won many awards, including The University of Sao Paulo’s Gold Medal in Ophthalmology, The European Ophthalmology Award of Excellence, The American Academy of Ophthalmology Award of Excellence, and The Pan American Association of Ophthalmology Life Achievement Award. He is the recipient of the Rio Branco Medal, which corresponds to the Order of Brazil. In research, Dr. Burnier received the World Health Organization Award for Melanoma research. In 2009 the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) awarded him the FARVO (fellow of ARVO) medal for his research contributions to the field of ocular pathology and oncology. In 2012 he received The Brazilian Academy of Science Award & Membership in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and in 2017, as a McGill University member, he was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS). During the ceremony, the CAHS summarized Dr. Burnier’s achievements as follows: “He is well recognized as a visionary leader in ophthalmology and pathology, being the only double-boarded physician in Canada. His ocular pathology laboratory is internationally recognized as one of the best in the world. His research in ocular diseases and ocular tumors, as well as new ocular imaging techniques, is cutting-edge, making a great impact in the field.”

In addition, Dr. Burnier was unanimously chosen President-Elect of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, PAAO (2018-2019) and President of the PAAO (2019-2021). He is also 45th Chair of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis. In 2016 the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology (SPO) established the Professor Miguel Burnier Jr. Award to be given every year to the best young ophthalmologist in the country. Among his teaching awards, Dr. Burnier has received the 2006 Gradle Teaching Award from The American Academy of Ophthalmology/Pan American Association of Ophthalmology. At McGill, Dr. Burnier was named to the Faculty Honour List for Educational Excellence in 2007. Also in Canada, Dr. Burnier received the Frederick Feldman Teaching Award from the University of Toronto. In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Henry C. Witelson Ocular Pathology Laboratory, the Burnier International Ocular Pathology Society (BIOPSY) was founded, which holds biennial conferences to unite past and current lab members and to encourage ongoing research in the fields of ophthalmology and pathology. The inaugural meeting of the society was in Canada (Montreéal, May 6-8, 2010), followed by meetings in Spain (2012), Brazil (2014), Canada (Montreéal, 2016) and Portugal (2018). BIOPSY currently has 200 members and is known for its continuous growth worldwide.


Martha Crago, B.A., M.Sc., PhD, C.M.
Board Member

Martha Crago is McGill University’s Vice-Principal (Research and Innovation) and Chair of the Governing Council of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). ‎Professor Crago has also been the Chair of the Research Committee of the U15 group of Canada’s research-intensive universities and is a member of the Research Partnership Committee of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and of the Senior Research Officers of the Association of American Universities (AAU). In 2016, the Minister of Science of Canada selected her to be a member of Canada’s Fundamental Science Review. Professor Crago was named a Chevalier dans l'ordre des palmes académiques by the French government and, in 2017, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.


David Eidelman, MDCM’79
Board Member

Dr. Eidelman, a native Montrealer, is Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at McGill University. He is also Vice-President of the Réseau Universitaire Intégré de Santé et Services Sociaux (RUISSS) McGill, a network mandated by the Quebec government to coordinate health care, training and research across 63 per cent of the province’s land mass.

Prior to his appointment January 1, 2012, Dr. Eidelman served as Chair of the McGill Department of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) for seven years. In addition to his administrative successes as Chair and Physician-in-Chief, Dr. Eidelman has served as Director of McGill’s renowned Division of Respiratory Diseases.

After receiving his MDCM (Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery) degree in 1979, Dr. Eidelman continued training in internal medicine at the University of Toronto, first at St. Michael’s Hospital and then at Toronto General Hospital. He returned to Montreal to pursue advanced training in respiratory medicine and research at McGill. He is an accomplished clinician-scientist, whose research in inflammatory disorders of the airways is based at the Meakins-Christie Laboratories in the Research Institute of the MUHC.

In addition to his academic responsibility, Dr. Eidelman currently serves on various boards, including that of the Integrated Health and Social Services University Network for West-Central Montreal (CIUSSS West-Central Montreal).


Pierre Gfeller, MD CM MBA
Board Member

Pierre Gfeller has built a dynamic career in health care over nearly 40 years that includes a host of roles and accomplishments, which have been recognized by peers and decision-makers in the Québec health and social services network alike. From his start as a family physician to his evolution as a senior executive, improving the quality of care has been the thread that pulls him from one opportunity to the next. At ease reorganizing institutions and services, he has become known for his mobilizing leadership style and results-oriented approach, each of which has been instrumental since he was appointed President and Executive Director of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) in May 2018.

From the get-go, his overarching objective at the MUHC has been to help the organization perform at the highest level. Pivotal to his vision are exemplary governance and teamwork; a respectful, stimulating, safe and ethical workplace; innovation and excellence in all aspects of its mission; and stakeholder engagement.

Dr. Gfeller possesses a strong belief that if solid infrastructures are the requisite foundation for the delivery and teaching of health care, as well as the conducting of research, then people are the cornerstones to success. With that in mind, over and above stewarding projects to modernize physical space, technology and equipment at the MUHC, Dr. Gfeller has sought to ensure that talented experts are positioned in key clinical, administrative and research positions. With respect as one of his core values, he wants to see equity, diversity and inclusion become second nature to employment practices, but also to relationships with the patient population. He has also dedicated the last couple of years to strengthening university, foundation and community relations.

Dr. Gfeller holds a non-remunerated appointment in the McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, notably that of Adjunct Professor, (part-time, clinical) in the Department of Family Medicine. He is also President of the McGill University Integrated Health and Social Services Network (RUISSS McGill). In this capacity he works with the Ministry of Health and Social Services and regional partners to improve continuously essential services to designated communities across 63 % of Québec. An example of an important program launched by RUISSS McGill includes the Indigenous Affairs Committee to develop projects and make recommendations to foster cultural safety within partner organizations servicing Indigenous people.

Before joining the MUHC, Dr. Gfeller was President and Executive Director of the Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre (CIUSSS) for the Nord-de-l'Île-de-Montréal sector, where he oversaw the successful integration of hospitals, specialized clinics, long-term-care centres (CHSLDs), and local community service centres (CLSCs) from 2015 to 2018. He was also responsible for the recruitment of a strong and diverse management team, while balancing the budget. Between 2012 and 2015, Dr. Gfeller was Executive Director at Sacré-Coeur Hospital. Among other achievements, he is proud to have helped restore a positive work climate and improve quality standards such that accreditation was granted in 2014 without any conditions. Previously, he served in both consultancy and management capacities after practicing medicine, as a family physician, from 1981 to 2002.

Pierre Gfeller earned his Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery (MD, CM) from McGill University (1980), and holds a graduate degree in community health from Université Laval (1986), an Executive MBA from Université Paris-Dauphine (2000) and a MBA with honours from Université du Québec à Montréal (2000). Over the years, he has obtained certifications from the Medical Council of Canada (1980), Diplomate of the National Boards of Medical Examiners (1985), and the Canadian College of Family Physicians (CCFP, 1987), and Québec Specialist in Family Medicine from the Collège des médecins du (2010). Dr. Gfeller is fluent in English and French.


Russell J. Hiscock, CFA, CPA, CMA, ICD.D
Board Member

Russell J. Hiscock retired as President and CEO of the CN Investment Division in 2018. The Division manages assets for the CN Pension Trust Funds (the Fund), one of the largest corporate pension funds in Canada. Mr. Hiscock joined the CN Investment Division in 1987 as Manager - Investments and was subsequently appointed Manager - Common Stocks and then General Manager. Mr. Hiscock has had many years of direct equity portfolio management experience in both the Canadian and International stock markets, as well as considerable private equity investing activity with particular emphasis on the energy sector.

Mr. Hiscock is a seasoned and internationally respected investment management executive with a lengthy record of success and a worldwide industry network. He is a forward-thinking, results-oriented leader with expertise in institutional investment, capital markets, corporate governance and government relations. He is also an experienced operating executive, having chaired both the Fund’s real estate division, which manages the Fund’s real estate assets, and the oil and gas division, which manages two sizeable, wholly owned operating subsidiaries and one publicly traded company.

Mr. Hiscock has held numerous corporate and not-for-profit board positions, including service on several hospital foundation and industry association boards. He is a member of the Board of Governors at the University of Waterloo. With Hewitt Group, he is a member of the Investment Advisory Committee of the family office. He is Board member and chairman of the Audit Committee for Valeura Energy Inc. and participates on the Investment Advisory Committee of Nunavut Trust. Mr. Hiscock has also played key roles at the McGill University Health Centre Foundation, where he is a member of the Board of Directors and past chairman of both the Investment Committee and the Human Resources Committee. Among past activities, he has been a member of the Pension Investment Committee for McGill University, past chairman of the Board and of the Government Relations Committee for the Pension Investment Association of Canada (PIAC), past board member for the University of Toronto Asset Management Corporation and for Freehold Royalties Ltd., and past chairman of numerous CN Pension Fund companies in the oil and gas, real estate, infrastructure, private equity and absolute return areas.

Mr. Hiscock’s holds an Honours Co-Op Bachelor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo (1975), an MA (economics) from Western University and an MBA (finance) from the Rotman School at the University of Toronto. He has earned the CFA, CPA, CMA and ICD.D designations. He lives in Montreal, is married and has two grown sons.


Gloria Shaffer Tannenbaum, PhD
Board Member

Born in Montreal, Dr. Tannenbaum received her B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD degrees from McGill University. She subsequently pursued postdoctoral research training in neuroendocrinology as a Medical Research Council of Canada scholar. In 1978 she joined the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology & Neurosurgery at McGill and became Director of the Neuropeptide Physiology Laboratory at the McGill University-Montreal Children’s Hospital Research Institute. She was promoted to the rank of Full Professor in 1989 and was accorded the honorific title of Emeritus Professor in 2010.

Dr. Tannenbaum is internationally recognized for her pioneering research on growth hormone (GH), a pituitary hormone that is essential for normal growth and metabolism. She provided the first evidence that growth hormone secretion is characterized by a striking ultradian rhythm; this landmark observation (a citation classic) provided a complete new dimension for the understanding of growth hormone regulation and postnatal growth. She subsequently devoted her entire career to unlocking the complex brain mechanisms that regulate the growth hormone rhythm. Her laboratory was widely regarded as the foremost centre for the study of growth hormone pulsatility. Her basic physiological experiments have been extended into the clinical domain towards the design of more reliable clinical tests for establishing the diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency in children with failure to grow.

Dr. Tannenbaum has published over 120 original scientific articles and reviews in high-impact journals, edited two books, and has been an invited lecturer and keynote speaker at prestigious universities and international conferences throughout the world. She has been granted several patents for her discoveries (from the U.S., Europe and Australia). She has further served her academic community through editorship on eight important biomedical journals, membership on several grant review panels and organization of international conferences. She has trained numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in basic research and medicine worldwide. She and her research group consistently received peer-reviewed funding from provincial, national and international agencies. She has also fostered fruitful collaborations with the pharmaceutical industry and served as a consultant to both industry and academia. Her intellectual property continues to be commercialized.

In addition to her research and teaching accomplishments, Dr. Tannenbaum has also provided strong leadership to a number of scientific organizations. She has held many important offices at national and international levels and received numerous scholarships, awards and distinctions throughout her career. Her international stature and leadership ability are further evidenced by the high recognition she has received from the American Endocrine Society, including election to the governing body of the Society, and appointments to advisory committees, including finance, audit and strategic planning. In 2018 Dr. Tannenbaum was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre.

Beyond the laboratory, Dr. Tannenbaum has crusaded for women’s rights and educational opportunities for women through her active involvement in international organizations such as Women in Endocrinology and Women in Neuroscience, as well as in a number of key working groups at McGill University. These efforts have led to greater mentoring, guidance and participation of women in traditionally male-dominated areas of the health sciences.

Closer to home, Gloria Tannenbaum is the mother of four daughters.
