Marc Beltempo’s publication, “Outcomes and care practices for preterm infants born at less than 33 weeks’ gestation: a quality-improvement study,” was selected as Editor’s Pick in the January 27, 2020, issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ 192 (4)). The study received national media attention.
Geneviève Bernard was awarded the Maude Abbott Prize in 2020 by McGill University for her early-career achievements as a world-renowned expert on leukodystrophies, a debilitating group of neurodegenerative disorders. Learn more in Med e-News.
Sasha Bernatsky gave a plenary oral presentation at the international American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Annual Scientific Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, in November 2019. Her abstract, “Cancer Risk in a Large Inception SLE Cohort,” was featured in the ACR Spotlight program, and she also presented on “Big Data: Analytics, Registries and Beyond” at the ACR Conference pre-event. Jean Bourbeau was named one of the 2019 distinguished CHEST educators at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians in October. This honour recognizes his commitment, involvement and leadership in CHEST education programs and activities. Learn more
Charles Bourque, Elham Emami, Zu-hua Gao, Leonard Levin, Errol B. Marliss, Cécile Rousseau and Kevin Schwartzman were inducted fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in September 2019. The new inductees were among 49 Canadians recognized for their leadership in the health sciences. Learn more
Francesco (Franco) Carli was elected Chairman of the American Prehabilitation Society. The American Prehabilitation Society regroups doctors and health practitioners from across the United States and encourages the development of Peri Operative Programs (POP) in hospitals. Learn more
Kaberi Dasgupta won the Department of Medicine Mid-Career Staff Research Award 2020 from the McGill University Health Centre. The prize recognizes sustained excellence by a Department of Medicine staff member of more than 10 years up to 20 years.
Natalie Dayan won the New Investigator Award 2020 from the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine in recognition of excellence in research in general internal medicine.
Emmett Francoeur was awarded the 2020 Prix Letondal by the Association of Pediatricians of Quebec for his pioneering work in child development and exceptional contributions to every dimension of his profession. Learn more
Gerald Fried was appointed Associate Dean, Education, Technology & Innovation and Director of the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning, both positions within the Faculty of Medicine, McGill University. Learn more
Catherine Goudie received a 2019 Junior Faculty Career Development Award from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CSSS) at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, U.S. With collaborators at the CCSS, the National Cancer Institute (U.S.) and SickKids in Canada, her winning project will evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the McGill Interactive Pediatric OncoGenetic Guidelines (MIPOGG) tool in survivors of certain cancer types, including osteosarcoma. Co-led by Tarek Hijal, John Kildea and the late Laurie Hendren, the Opal Health Informatics Group from the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) garnered multiple prizes for the Opal patient empowerment app in 2019. The group was awarded the Grand Prix de l’année at Le Gala des Prix TI en Santé et Services Sociaux in November as well as the inaugural Trottier Webster Innovation Award funded by the MUHC Foundation, the Trottier Family Foundation and the R. Howard Webster Foundation. Earlier in the year, the Opal group earned the prestigious Coup de coeur des ministres honour at Les Prix d’excellence du réseau de la santé et des services sociaux.
Wassim Kassouf received Quebec’s Distinguished Research Scholar Award from the Canadian Urological Association.
Nadine Kronfli was keynote speaker at the Canadian Liver Meeting 2020 in Montreal, Quebec. She presented on “Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Care in Canadian Correctional Facilities: The long road ahead towards HCV elimination.”
Emily McDonald won the Department of Medicine Early Career Staff Research Award 2020 from the McGill University Health Centre. The prize recognizes excellence in research by a Department of Medicine staff member within 10 years of completion of training.
Emily McDonald and Todd C. Lee earned recognition for their MedSafer app, which tied for the 2020 Marika Zenka Roy Innovation Prize at the McGill Clinical Innovation Competition (CLIC). This deprescribing software will especially benefit older adults suffering from the harmful side effects of polypharmacy. Learn more
Dick Menzies received one of two research prizes from the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec in November 2019 for his article, “Four Months of Rifampin or Nine Months of Isoniazid for Latent Tuberculosis in Adults.”
Martin Olivier will receive the 2020 Bernhard Cinader Award, the highest honour given by the Canadian Society for Immunology. The Bernhard Cinader award lectureship is given to a Canadian scientist who exemplifies distinguished scientific leadership and accomplishments in immunology.
Nitika Pant Pai participated in an Innovation Panel discussion as well as presenting on her international work with the HIVSmart! app at the Forum on Microbial Threats, U.S. National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., in December 2019. Bernard Robaire was named recipient of the Jansen Distinguished Service Award from the Society for the Study of Reproduction. The award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated unselfish service and leadership in advancing the discipline of reproductive biology. Learn more
Maida Sewitch was designated a Fellow of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology in March 2020. She was selected for this honour in recognition of her continuing service to the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology and to Canadian gastroenterology. Learn more
