Michal Abrahamowicz received the Honorary Lifetime Member award from the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics in July 2021. He is the first Canadian to receive this honour.
Marc Beltempo is last author of a publication, “Fluid status in the first 10 days of life and death/bronchopulmonary dysplasia among preterm infants,” selected as one of the Top Articles of 2021 by the Society of Pediatric Research. Read the publication in Pediatric Research.
Stefanie Blain-Moraes is one of three up-and-coming research stars to win the prestigious Principal’s Prize for Outstanding Emerging Researchers in 2022. The prize honours her work on “Enhancing the way we interact with non-communicative individuals. Learn more
Jean Bourbeau was elected a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) in September 2021. One of the most prestigious honours in the Canadian health sciences community, election to the CAHS recognizes individuals for their leadership in, and commitment to, their field of expertise. Cecilia Costiniuk received the 2022 Canadian Association for HIV Research─Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CAHR-CANFAR) Excellence in HIV Research Award, Clinical Sciences track. This award recognizes her track record of excellence and her demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of those living with, or at risk for, HIV. Learn more
Raquel del Carpio-O’Donovan has been elected honorary president by the World Federation of Neuroradiological Societies. This recognition of her substantial contributions to neuroradiology at the international level will be celebrated May 13 to 16, 2020, in New York City, during the Symposium Neuroradiologicum.
Theresa Gyorkos was lead contributor to the recently launched World Health Organization (WHO) Policy Brief on Deworming for adolescent girls and women of reproductive age. She is a senior scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre and director of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Parasite Epidemiology and Control. Tarek Hijal was named Chair of the National Radiation Oncology Committee by unanimous selection of the Programme québécois de cancérologie of the Health and Social Services Ministry, Quebec, in January 2022. Learn more
Celeste Johnston, a distinguished former nursing researcher at the RI-MUHC, received the Order of Canada in December 2021 for her foundational research in neonatal pain and for further advancing the field as a beloved mentor. Professor Emerita in the Ingram School of Nursing at McGill’s Faculty of Medicine, her research focuses on measurement and non-pharmacological management of pain in preterm neonates, animal models of neonatal pain, and changing health care professionals’ practices related to pain management for infants. Michael S. Kramer, former director of the Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation at the RI-MUHC, received the 2021 « Prix du chercheur émérite » from the Réseau de recherche en santé des populations du Québec. Presented in a virtual ceremony on March 17, 2022, as part of the annual Research Day of the Réseau, this prize recognizes an exceptional career in research in public and population health by a Quebec investigator. Nadine Kronfli received the 2021 New Investigator Award from the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease (AMMI) Canada at an awards ceremony on April 6, 2022. The award recognizes her outstanding contribution to the elimination of infectious diseases, including hepatitis C and SARS-CoV-2, in Canadian correctional settings. Learn more
Jean-Jacques Lebrun’s research team won the 2021 Québec Science magazine’s Discovery of the Year Award for uncovering the genetic mechanisms at work in triple-negative breast cancers and finding a promising therapy. Learn more
Bruce Mazer was awarded the inaugural Donald Stark Award for Excellence in Leadership in the Canadian Allergy Community by The Canadian Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Foundation in October 2021.
Ariane Marelli received the 2021 John J. Day MD Award of Excellence from the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Quebec, presented as a bequest. This award of excellence in research is granted annually to the researcher from McGill University who received the highest evaluation in the grant-in-aid competition in cardiovascular research. Dr. Marelli’s award-winning work is titled “Heart Failure Trajectory Along the Care Continuum for Congenital Heart Disease Patients Across the Lifespan.” Read more
Jean Ouellet, with Evan Dimentberg, Université Laval MD/M.Sc. candidate, won the Hakim Family Innovation Prize at the 2022 McGill Clinical Innovation Competition. Their team developed a smartphone app, SeeSpine, to remotely monitor pediatric scoliosis. Learn more
Madhukar Pai was selected to serve on two World Health Organization (WHO) committees. His appointment to the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for TB in the South-East Asia Region was effective June 1, 2021, and appointment to the Advisory group on Tuberculosis Diagnostics and Laboratory Strengthening on July 19, 2021. Morag Park received the “100 Years of Research” prize from the Cancer Research Society and the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation in 2021. Her team received a grant for their work focusing on the cells of the most aggressive form of breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Learn more
Dan Poenaru received the 2021 Trottier-Webster Innovation Award funded by the MUHC Foundation, the Trottier Family Foundation and the R. Howard Webster Foundation for his project titled “Pediatric Trauma Innovative Training in VR (PeTIT-VR) Increases Trainees’ Performance in Pediatric Trauma.”
Saleem Razack co-authored a winning article in the Best Commentary category of the 12th annual John A. Benson Jr., MD Professionalism Article Prizes announced by the ABIM Foundation in 2022. The article, “Professionalism revisited during the pandemics of our time: COVID-19 and racism,” was published in Perspectives on Medical Education and co-authored by Dr. Razack with Zareen Zaidi, MD, PhD, of the Florida College of Medicine, and Arno K. Kumagai, MD, of the University of Toronto. Learn more
Adel Schwertani is corecipient of the sixth Tomoh Masaki award, presented by the Endothelin International Advisory Board during the American Physiological Society’s Seventeenth International Conference on Endothelin in November 2021. Learn more
Don Sheppard has been seconded to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to serve a three-year term as executive scientific director for the newly created Antimicrobial Resistance Task Force, effective November 2021. Learn more
Jonathan Spicer and his team won the best paper award at the 2021 Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology meeting. Dr. Spicer presented results from the oncology clinical trial known as Checkmate 816, for which RI-MUHC investigators were key contributors.
Rhian Touyz was named Editor-in-Chief of Hypertension, an American Heart Association journal, effective January 1, 2022. “During her time as deputy editor of the journal, Dr. Touyz continually impressed us with her leadership, professionalism and desire to make a positive impact on hypertension care for millions of people around the world,” says Eldrin F. Lewis, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, chair of the American Heart Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee. “We look forward to her stellar leadership, as she will undoubtedly push the journal to new heights as the preeminent research forum for the latest advancements in hypertension, particularly those that can improve outcomes and quality of life for our patients.”
